The Scientific and Economic Committee for Medicines (CSE) operates within the Agency and performs the functions set forth in Article 19 of the Decree of the Minister of Health no. 245 of 20 September 2004, as last amended by the Decree of the Minister of Health no. 3 of 8 January 2024.  

In particular, the Committee performs the functions previously assigned to the Scientific-Technical Committee and the Price and Reimbursement Committee, as well as the tasks assigned by Article 48, paragraph 5, letters d), e), and l) of Decree-Law no 269 of 30 September 2003, converted, with amendments, by Law no. 326 of 24 November 2003. 

The CSE adopts its own determinations with autonomy at technical and health-scientific level and also carries out technical-scientific consultancy activities.  

The Scientific and Economic Committee for Medicines carries out technical-consultative support functions to the Agency for the purposes of the negotiation provided for in Article 48, paragraph 33, of decree-law no. 269 of 30 September 2003, converted, with amendments, by law no. 326 of 24 November 2003. 

The Committee is appointed by a decree of the Minister of Health and is made up of ten members, of whom the technical-scientific director of the Agency and the President of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, or his/her delegate, are members by right; four members are appointed by the Minister of Health, one of whom acts as chairman; one member is appointed by the Minister of Economy and Finance; three members are appointed by the Permanent Conference for Relations between the State, the Regions and the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano.  

The members who are not ex officio hold office for three years, renewable consecutively for a single term.
