The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) and the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) announce the establishment of a joint technical table aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration in the analysis and utilisation of data from AIFA’s Monitoring Registries. The technical table also includes the Italian Federation of Cooperative Groups in Oncology (FICOG) and the Italian College of Hospital Medical Oncologists (CIPOMO).

The initiative is part of activities aimed at promoting the appropriate use of medicines and supporting, through structured analysis, the planning, evaluation and governance of regulatory aspects of medicines, as well as the production of scientific evidence of high clinical value.

The collaboration developed over the years between AIFA, AIOM, FICOG and CIPOMO has enabled the implementation of joint initiatives aimed at the integrated analysis of registry data and the development of knowledge to support the evaluation of drug use in clinical practice. This synergy has enabled comparative analyses to be carried out between the characteristics of patients treated in clinical practice and those included in registration studies, as well as in-depth studies on various specific conditions.

During the first meeting, the areas of analysis were defined, with particular attention paid to identifying priority criteria, assessed on the basis of regulatory aspects, impact on patient care, innovation and clinical relevance.

“The wealth of information contained in the AIFA Monitoring Registries represents a strategic resource for the national oncology system,” said Massimo Di Maio, President of AIOM. “Strengthening structured dialogue with AIFA allows us to make appropriate use of data collected in daily practice, contributing to a more informed definition of priorities and a better utilisation of available resources. We would like to thank AIFA’s Technical and Scientific Director, Pierluigi Russo, for promoting this initiative, and more generally we thank AIFA and its President, Robert Nisticò, for their focus on collaboration with scientific societies.”

The technical table will therefore serve as a permanent forum for discussion between the Agency and the professional bodies involved, with the aim of facilitating joint planning of activities to analyse data from the AIFA Monitoring Registries and promoting a consistent and coordinated use of the available information.

“AIFA’s Monitoring Registries constitute a unique infrastructure within the European landscape,” emphasises AIFA’s Technical and Scientific Director, Pierluigi Russo. “Strengthening collaboration with scientific societies and professional bodies is essential for directing analytical activities towards areas of the greatest institutional importance and for continuously improving a system that supports regulatory, organisational and governance decisions regarding medicines. We are convinced that dialogue with doctors who work with the Registries on a daily basis can foster greater alignment of objectives and contribute both to improving the system and to the effectiveness of operational activities.”

The AIFA Monitoring Registries, which have been operational since 2005, are in fact a key tool for verifying the conditions for the reimbursement of medicines and for implementing conditional reimbursement agreements (Managed Entry Agreements – MEAs). Over time, the Registry System has also made available a wealth of particularly relevant information, which can be used to contextualise the use of medicines in daily clinical practice at a national level, thereby providing guidance on specific areas of focus to doctors and pharmacists within the National Health Service.
