Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs): AIFA introduces Note ‘N01’

A new Note will regulate the conditions for prescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) covered by the National Health Service. At its meeting on 28 January 2026, the AIFA Board of Directors approved the introduction of Note ‘N01’ and the simultaneous repeal of previous Notes 1 and 48.
The new regulation will come into force in accordance with the procedures indicated in the decision to be published shortly in the Official Gazette.
Note N01 aims to regulate the conditions for prescribing PPIs covered by the NHS: omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, esomeprazole and rabeprazole, in various formulations and dosages. In addition to updating the conditions for the appropriate use of these medicines, the Note defines certain relevant elements in relation to the limitations on the chronic prescription of PPIs.
The Note, developed by the AIFA Scientific and Economic Committee, is the result of coordination between the Agency, general practitioners and scientific societies. The text was developed within the framework of the “Technical Committee for the Revision of Notes and Treatment Plans” in collaboration with FNOMCeO, FIMMG, SIMG, FMT, SNAMI, SMI and SIFO, and with scientific societies of gastroenterological interest: SIGE, SIMI, AIGO, SIED and FADOI.
