Interactive OsMed: available online the update on consumption and pharmaceutical expenditure in Italy

The ‘Interactive OsMed’ is online on the Italian Medicines Agency portal, updated with the latest data on pharmaceutical consumption and expenditure in Italy. With just a few clicks, users can access, select and compare tables and graphs from the latest edition of the OsMed Report (2022-2023 data, updated on 23 April 2024), analyse usage trends - both overall and by region - and obtain personalised reports.
The report of the National Observatory on the Use of Medicinal Products (OsMed) has long been a snapshot of the trends in pharmaceutical consumption and expenditure in Italy. Since 2020, AIFA has offered an interactive consultation method on its website, facilitating the exploration of the amount of data present in the OsMed paper and its digital versions. This dynamic approach allows easier access to useful information for drug use analysis, monitoring prescriptive appropriateness, health planning, as well as training and information activities.
By connecting to the page aifa.gov.it/osmed-interactive, you can consult data on approved care regime, purchases by public health facilities, gross expenditure per capita and consumption by ATC and by therapeutic category. The platform, enriched with graphs and interactive maps, allows creating detailed reports based on the specific needs of users, resulting in a valuable tool for national and regional pharmaceutical programming and for expenditure governance. It is possible to make comparisons between different regions, highlighting differences and similarities in consumption and expenditure deviations from the national average. The interactive consultation also includes time series for national and regional data, starting from 2018.
With the Interactive OsMed, AIFA confirms its commitment to promoting the appropriate use of medicines and supporting the expenditure governance, providing the Regions with data and analytical tools to identify critical areas, implement targeted measures to optimise the allocation of local financial resources and ensure the sustainability of pharmaceutical care by the National Health Service throughout Italy.
